Children’s world of fun in the face of technological temptations.
Broadly understood childhood is definitely the most joyful period in human life. One of the key roles in the proper development of our children is fun. In the child’s life this form of activity allows it to explore and discover the world.
What does a child need fun for?
Classically understood fun is necessary to ensure proper development. It contributes to physical and emotional well-being, develops creativity, dexterity, spatial imagination, and motor skills. It is also the most beneficial factor influencing the mental development of a child in a three-dimensional environment. Play also significantly affects the social development of children – it develops the ability to work in a group, share, negotiate and resolve conflicts. It significantly develops emotional intelligence.
How does technology change the playing habits?
Dziś wielu rodziców martwi się zmianą zwyczajów zabawowych u dzieci oraz wypieraniem klasycznych jej form przez zdobycze technologii. Today, many parents are worried about the change in children’s play habits and the displacement of classic forms by the achievements of technology. As it turns out, these fears are justified. Children, like adults, are threatened by a sedentary lifestyle. Numerous studies have also confirmed that a large amount of time spent in the virtual computer world replaces manual play. The correct development of children in highly developed countries has been called into question. Manual work is becoming less popular – both in teaching facilities and, unfortunately, at home.
A child and television.
Today, kids have become active recipients of ubiquitous mass entertainment. We know that television has a significant impact on the child’s development and can strengthen the child’s behavior, both positive and negative. What good will a child get from watching TV programs? They broaden knowledge, enrich the vocabulary and influence the development of prosocial and cultural behavior. The negative aspect is certainly the fact of the mentioned displacement of other forms of activity. We observe that children stop reading books, they do not play games and outdoor activities, they do not know what DIY or contact with peers is. It is dangerous that television does not leave space for imagination and fantasy. In the constantly developing and immature child’s nervous system, excess stimuli significantly overload the nervous system, which leads to feelings of anxiety and aggression. Limited or no manual work in the real three-dimensional world can even lead to impairment of the cognitive and intellectual system of the youngest.
What do experts say about this?
A study for the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine has shown that nowadays “children should play outside” and that “a play time that seems to be gradually disappearing” should be resurgent and decisive.
Therefore, if we are conscious, responsible parents, we should ensure that the recommendations of experts are properly implemented. The first step that can significantly facilitate our task will be choosing the right toy. We will get to this topic in the next article.
